The most important thing you can do for your site
is promoting it by search engine submission. You can pay a fortune to have someone else say they'll
do it for you, or do it yourself!
Be aware, though, that the rating your page is given depends upon what it contains in a searcheable format, mainly as text.
In many cases you must have your Meta-Tags installed on each page to ensure that the automated programs or "bot's" that glean information
from your pages for the search engines to index receive the sort of text (words) that have relevance to the purpose and content of each page.
This is something that should be done regularly, at least every few months, to make sure the indexes have newer information, and to
update your site's placement on results pages. Yahoo is an exception to this as they actually review your site first!
If you'd like to try a free, more automated process for 36 basic search engines, got to Add Me
to use their auto submit program. Another excellent example of brains working overtime is at Olav Helleso-Knutsen's [Mirror Site!], it is a free script-program that automatically submits multiple page-links to 20 most popular search sites! There are two different versions of his free submission script there.
Spam Engines
Many former search engines have now turned into spam indexes, that only accept paid spam listings into their severely limited indexes. These engines allow
practices called "keyword buying" or "keyword bidding" which severely distort the quality of the "search" results a hapless visitor will be presented with. They
are not bad for visitors who are simply shopping, but index little information of any real value.
Beware of any scam that suggests that you should pay for each click your listing receives! This is literally giving them a licence to steal your money.
If you wish pay for such services get either paid placement at a flat rate. If you get involved in any 'bid per click" scam you will likely find your account
is drained by pay per click robots, used to generate artificial "traffic" which they must pay for! There is no way to ascertain that a server is not merely
spoofing the IP address it gives when a page is requested! Paying for hits is a false premise, it's visitors who browse on through your sitem because it contains
information that they were looking for that you want!
On with the Engines..
Each one of the on the following pages connect to major search engines submit areas. The links open in new
browser windows which makes it a bit easier! Also note that some indexes only list a particular type of site. An alternate version of this (updated nore often?) is at SubmitPlus, it's really amazing how many independent engines and indexes there are. AltaVista have now come up with a clever image-code trick that forces you to submit to them manually!
