- WebTV Convertors- A badly crippled imitation of a computer that displays webpages on TV sets, at a screen size that is
around 480 wide by 320 high! These throwback thingy's are only barely suitable for viewing the lamest, tiny-looking webpages possible, and have many other annoying, non-standard traits and bugs. The WebTV "ghetto"
is expanding slowly, and most people who waste good money on these things soon discover how badly they need a computer. In fact, today you can buy a still powerful, older 486 or Pentium-based personal computer for the price of a
WebTV convertor! Where this paragraph ends appears a full page high and wide on WebTV, except they misinterpret tables, squishing only those "left over", so it could end up showing as a mile-high column of text 4-5 words wide if not for the invisible image we put on the bottom of all these pages to fix it!
You can see it on this page, it's an example of how rising tides can sink all ships. They cannot save files,
scroll horizontally, use frames properly, install plugins, run most javascripts or any Java, show animated HTML, or open documents in a new window. For the most part, they are a nuisance and unless they improve dramatically, may go the way of the Edsel.
Unfortunately, their users are indeed, quite fond to spend the money they think they've saved! Aggressive new marketing of them as a 'convenience' surrogate for laptops, doubtless means they will not dissapear soon, resulting in a radical dumbing-down of the lower standard.
- HTML 4.0- They very latest and best combination of javascript and stylesheet capable browsers that support dynamic HTML. Dynamic HTML documents can react, and animate their elements to provide a truly
stylish and interactive experience. These include all of the 4 and 5-version browsers by Netscape and Microsoft, found on all modern PC's, and Macs. These are truly state of the art and worthwhile to develop special
website enhancements for.
The flexibility of these browsers is like none before, and truly amazing graphical environments can be created that rival screen and cartoon animation, without plugins or add-on applications to display the content!
Most computers that use these browsers support higher screen resolutions of 800x600 pixels, including the Imac, a cutesy little web-puter released recently with this rather smallish screen capability. At the very least all
PC's support 640x480 which is roughly the width of the content of this page.
