Animation!

This part of the site is a demonstration and discussion of the various things that make up what is referred to as Dynamic HTML. There really isn't a single thing that itself is DHTML, what it is is a combination of Style Sheet, Javascript and plain HTML elements that can be combined to deliver pages with interactive graphical content, like this front page at Dollsland.

One disadvantage of DHTML, is that it usually requires a number of images to load, in order to manipulate them on the screen once the script starts running, so the pages take a bit longer to load. Of course, you can use fewer images and rely on text fonts and text elements instead to reduce this burden at the expense of less graphical versatility. Relying on fonts also raises the issue of weather the fonts are installed or available on the users machine.

At this stage of your visit to this site, the script on the previous page did one of two things:

  1. It checked to see if your browser supports DHTML for you and if so, it reloaded this page, that has the link to Dollsland on it.
  2. If the browser didn't support DHTML, you would have been left at the last page with the instructions to turn on your browsers features, or use a better browser.

This is the sort of thing that must be done to implement DHTML properly, since it relies on the browsers ability to interpret it to be seen, so you must have some sort of backup for users of less gifted equipment.

Unfortunately, if you've gotten here, we can't send you back to that page with this link to read it, because you have to turn your javascript off beforehand to be left stuck there!
